Sushi Tomi
This is the chef/owner of Sushi Tomi in Mountain View, CA. I've known him for maybe 10 years. I only get there once in a blue moon, but he always remembers me. IMHO, you can spend a lot more for sushi, you can get much more elegant dining experiences, but there is no better sushi. 31 July 2006That Impossible Black Dog
Well, at least it shows that she really can run again and how much fun she has in the surf. Darn shadow details. It's so easy to underexpose or overexpose her and so hard to recover from either. This one was underexposed and I had to use every trick I know to bring out what little detail there was. And I know, it still doesn't look right. I've tried shooting with a flash, and that looks really bad. I guess a little overexposed is better, at least there's hope for post. 24 July 2006Osprey Banding
She looks happy, but it was actually pretty sad. We set out to band the osprey chicks in a nest at the U. Mass. Field station. But the nest was empty. There's only one chick left on the east side of Nantucket this year. Perhaps something bad is going on? The weather has been bad this year, lots of big storms with lots of wind. But the naturalists suspect that some sort of pesticide or herbicide may be getting to them. 22 July 20067:45 AM Fast Ferry to Hyannis
Mostly commuters at that hour. Also a postcard from Hyannis harbor on my return trip. 13 July 2006Reworked for better shadow detail
Turns out this is a case where it is very important to sharpen after resizing. The full sized version that goes with the version below looks great on my monitor. But all that shadow detail gets totally plugged when SM resizes. This version was reworked from scratch and also started from much a flatter raw conversion. Almost the entire trick is to take to CMYK and steepen the black channel curve like there is no tomorrow, use selective color to remove the excess CMY from the blacks (K is now doing that work) and then sharpen the K channel A LOT. Oh, and I learned something about how to handle that pesky daisy. See my flower project gallery. 11 July 2006All 4 Legs Engaged
This is my 9 year old Labrador retriever, Vickie. She ruptured her right hind A.C.L. in November and had surgery for it in the beginning of January. It was a long road back, but now we have at least one more summer of running together and playing in the sunset surf.
Update: well, this isn't winning anything, but still I entered in the Fred Miranda WA, #211, "Motion". I also wrote a haiku to go with it:

Are All These Dogs Named "Winston"?
Also, today I started a flower project. Take a look. 9 July 2006Cape Air Pilot
Back and forth between Nantucket, Hyannis, Martha's Vineyard, & Boston all day long. The islands, particularly Nantucket are often foggy and really this kind of flying isn't for civilians (think of John Kennedy, Jr.) Many of these guys were Alaskan bush pilots before starting this gig. They fly Cessna 402C II's, which hold 9 passengers and the pilot (no co-pilot, I had that seat on this run.) 6 July 2006Main Street Chaos
The traditional 4th of July events on Nantucket always culminate with a giant water fight hosted by the fire department, which has the best squirt guns of all. I got quite a few I liked today, so I've started a gallery to tell the story. 4 July 2006
